Your first receiver, without the expensive detour

Get one local aircraft onto one local map. Everything else comes after that.

Define success before ordering parts

Your first target is modest and testable. Receive your own observations, see a current aircraft on your local map, and recover the station after a restart. A spectacular range record can wait. So can eight sharing accounts.

Already feeding a network? You probably need the sharing guide, not another operating-system image. Keep the working station intact. Photograph the connections and save its configuration before changing anything.

Starting with nothing? Use the setup planner to choose between an appliance-style image, an existing Linux host and a container-managed station. This is a choice about how you will maintain the receiver, not a test of technical virtue.

The parts that each earn a place

A basic station needs a compatible host, a suitable SDR, a 1090 MHz antenna, the necessary cable and connectors, reliable power, and a way to reach its management interface. An image-based host also needs appropriate storage. FlightAware's build guide is a useful illustrated checklist, but check current board support before buying a newer board. [1]

Write down the exact host model and SDR model. "Raspberry Pi" and "USB stick" are families, not compatibility statements. Check the chosen image's supported hardware and whether the radio already includes a filter or amplifier. Buying another amplifier merely because it is mentioned in a forum is a poor opening experiment.

Use a suitable power supply for the actual host. Put the receiver where you can inspect it. A first build under a desk is easier to fix than one already sealed into a box above the gutter.

Build on the table first

  1. Choose one installation route and open its official instructions. Keep your parts list alongside them.
  2. For an image install, use spare or backed-up storage. Confirm the target disk by capacity and device identity before writing. Imaging erases that disk.
  3. Attach the antenna and SDR. Connect the host to your network, preferably by Ethernet for the first setup when available.
  4. Complete the local setup. Record the device's address, software version and where its configuration lives.
  5. Open the local aircraft map. Wait for suitable traffic in view of your antenna. Check the decoder's status when nothing appears, rather than assuming that a quiet minute proves failure.
  6. Restart once. Check that the decoder and local map return without a manual terminal session.

This sequence deliberately excludes network sharing until local reception works. It leaves fewer places for a problem to hide. The installation routes explain which project owns each step.

What to record on day one

Keep a short station notebook. Record antenna position, approximate mounting height, cable type and length, receiver model, gain mode, decoder version and installation route. Add the date and a screenshot of the local statistics. Keep precise coordinates and account keys out of public copies.

Your baseline should say what the station actually did. "Received positions locally; restart recovered; first network accepted data" is useful. "Works brilliantly" is an expression of happiness, which is welcome but difficult to debug.

A map with aircraft is not the same as proof of your own reception if it also displays a network input. Check the source configuration. Avoid using a combined or remote stream as evidence that your dongle works.

Add one destination, then stop and check

Choose one service in the feeding directory. Follow that service's current onboarding instructions. Confirm that it associates the station with your account and reports recent data. Keep the key privately. Check its MLAT instructions separately from the ordinary feed.

Once that works, you can consider more destinations. One working receiver can support several feed clients, but compatibility depends on how those clients connect. The safest next addition reads the existing decoder's appropriate output rather than taking ownership of the same USB device. [2]

You are finished with the first build when you can explain the path from your antenna to your map and first service. Then move the antenna, change one variable at a time, and learn what your particular site can hear.
