Skylark privacy policy

Last updated 26 September 2026. This covers the Skylark iPhone app and the website at skylark.watch. Skylark is run from Ireland. Questions or requests go to dnncha@gmail.com.

What stays on your phone

• The camera. The live camera view is drawn on your phone and is never recorded or sent anywhere.
• Your exact position. Your location and compass are used on the phone to work out where to look. To fetch nearby aircraft, the app sends only an area rounded to about 10 km.
• Your logbook and photos. Sightings and the photos you attach are stored in the app on your phone. An exported logbook contains no photos and no viewing coordinates.

What the app sends, and to whom

• Aircraft requests go to Skylark's server with the rounded area described above.
• Place search sends the text you type to Apple Maps.
• Personalised highlights are off unless you turn on "Rank with Jev". When on, your stated interests and a short list of nearby aircraft are sent to TypeSafe to rank suggestions. Your position and logbook are not sent.
• Usage counts are sent only if you choose Share usage. They record things like opening the app, the lens naming its first aircraft, logging a sighting and viewing or starting a subscription, under a random ID made on your phone. They go to Mixpanel in the EU and never include your location, photos, logbook or camera. Turn this off at any time in Settings, which also deletes the random ID.
• Subscriptions are sold and billed by Apple. Skylark receives whether a subscription is active, never your payment details. Manage or cancel it in your iPhone's Settings.

The website

• Analytics load only after you press Accept on the banner. They send usage events and session recordings of the page to Mixpanel in the EU, with IP-based location switched off. Decline and nothing is sent.
• Accounts are optional. Signing in with Google, Apple or X stores your saved aircraft, saved searches, spotting preferences, sightings and alert settings. The precise viewing location stays in your browser.
• The contact form sends your name, email and message so Skylark can reply.
• The receiver network has its own terms for station owners, at skylark.watch/network-terms.
• Hosting. Cloudflare serves the site and processes request data, such as IP addresses, to deliver and protect it.

Aircraft data

Aircraft positions come from public ADS-B broadcasts collected by volunteer receivers. They describe aircraft, not you.

Your rights

You can ask for a copy of the data Skylark holds about you, or ask for it to be corrected or deleted, by emailing dnncha@gmail.com. Skylark does not sell personal data or use it for advertising. If you are unhappy with an answer, you can complain to the Data Protection Commission in Ireland.

Changes

When this policy changes, the date at the top changes with it.
